A caveat printed on the same page matters: those figures assume an average healthy adult dog in ideal body condition, and WSAVA asks owners to have their own dog's requirement set by their veterinary team. Treat the table as an order of magnitude, not a prescription.

Gram for gram, peanut butter carries about seventeen times the energy of plain canned pumpkin, and yogurt sits closer to pumpkin than to peanut butter. A week of pumpkin and a week of peanut butter are not the same week.

Where to find your dog's own daily calorie number
The table above uses an average; your dog's real number is on the bag in your kitchen. Under AAFCO model regulations, dog food labels carry a section headed Calorie Content, stated in kilocalories per kilogram and per familiar unit such as a cup or a can. Find that line, multiply by the cups you actually serve, and ten percent of the result is the mat allowance for the day, shared with biscuits and training rewards.
The version that costs nothing: spread the meal
Weigh the meal as usual, set aside a third, and spread it across the mat while the rest goes in the bowl. Nothing was added, and a portion that used to vanish in seconds now takes ten or fifteen minutes. Everything above assumes a healthy adult dog at a healthy weight. Two situations take the decision out of your hands.

A dog on a weight-loss plan needs a calorie target set by the vet who examined them, and that number is what the mat has to fit inside. Ask for it at your next appointment.
Your dog is on a prescribed or therapeutic diet. WSAVA is direct on this point: treats can unbalance a diet designed to be complete, and they should never replace a meal. How many calories does a lick mat add to my dog's day?
Exactly as many as the topping you spread on it, and none from the mat itself. One tablespoon of peanut butter carries 81 kcal according to the WSAVA treat guide, while the same spoon of plain canned pumpkin lands near 5 kcal based on the USDA figure of 34 kcal per 100 g. The topping decides everything.
Can a lick mat make my dog gain weight?
It can if the topping is served on top of full meals every day. WSAVA advises keeping treats under 10 percent of daily calories, and a generous smear of peanut butter clears that ceiling on its own for a small dog. Serving part of the measured meal on the mat instead keeps the daily total unchanged.
Is peanut butter too fattening for a lick mat?
It is not off limits, it is just expensive per spoon. The WSAVA treat guide lists peanut butter at 81 kcal per tablespoon, more than the whole daily treat allowance of a 10 kg dog. Use it as the flavor you drag through a cheaper base rather than the base itself, and always check the jar is xylitol-free.
Does freezing the topping change the calories?
No. Freezing changes how long the session lasts, not what the food contains. The same measured spoonful can occupy a dog several times longer straight from the freezer than it does at room temperature.
